Blog EntryComment Clean UpJul 3, '08 8:50 AM
by Linda for everyone
If you all don't mind, if you see a comment that is in another language and you recognize that the English interpretation would not belong here, please let either myself or Luiz know.  I don't want to inadvertently remove a comment that is an affirmation or a thank you regarding a post, but I honestly wouldn't know if something wasn't.  So if you see a hi, add me in klingon or something, please let us know.  We usually can recognize most of that and we don't get much thankfully, but I know there is or might be some now, and this is one of the cleanest groups on Multiply when it comes to this and we'd like to keep it that way.

THANKS!

I received confirmation from CS today that when you choose the CUSTOM COLOR BASE THEME, and either knowingly or unknowingly upload a Hi Resolution image as a background VIA the "browse to your computer" option, this Hi Res image will not expire.  It doesn't go into an album on your site to monitor for an expiration as your other images do.  However, if you alter the background image using CSS with that base theme, then you can assume the hi res image will expire.

There appears to be a misconception at Techcrunch that we Multiply Users are either ignorant "know no betters", or Company "plants". lol Please feel free to leave your reply to dispel such rumours.

EDIT: I just want to personally say thanks to everyone here that responded to this link from Multiply Design. Way to go, and the post is still open for comments there. Please read the following from Multiply's Email.

FROM MULTIPLY'S EMAIL

Multiply users speak their minds
Since their release last week, these new features have already garnered some press attention... and some of these articles have even received some attention from Multiply users!

One particular article, posted on TechCrunch, received a few replies from loyal Multiply users, who were subsequently accused, by a couple misinformed commenters, of being Multiply employees (or "plants") posting fake comments! (For the record, we would never do that.)

It quickly became apparent that Multiply users don't take kindly to those sorts of allegations, either, as dozens of comments poured forth from real Multiply users proclaiming their completely genuine love for Multiply.

So we'd like to thank the users who took the time to comment. (Thanks, guys!)

And if you're interested in seeing dozens of loyal Multiply users telling the world what's so great about Multiply, check it out here.

Even though most of us use THIS with Firefox:

STOP AUTOPLAY - FIREFOX ADD ON

To assist with many/most theme problems you may have, we are required to view your site in IE also.  Please note that we not only have many tabs/windows/sites open to do so, but we have many reasons we do not want to suddenly have ANY music suddenly blast out of our speakers.  These third party players (an annoyance to most anyway) are especially an "earsore" in help groups.

So please be considerate and disable this feature.  Otherwise we may just shut down our IE tab to your site and cease assistance.  It's too much trouble to hunt through your site to stop the noise (and sorry but yes, your music isn't necessarily OUR music, so in that respect, it's considered noise).

Many reasons not to use autoplay:

1.  We disable it in FF anyway so it's a waste of space.

2.  We just don't like your music.

3.  We have a headache.

4.  Baby is asleep - THANKS heaps.  Now someone else will have to help because we have to get the baby back to sleep.

5.  We are already listening to (fill in another music choice here)

6.  I can't hear the ten different menus on the phone that I must go through to get a doctor's appointment.  (YES we multi task here.  If we didn't, no one would get any help)

7.  I'm "voicing" online at the same time and your music just squelched my speakers and made someone on another continent deaf for one hour.

8.  The new season of "Ghost Hunters" is on TV and you just made me miss a full body apparition.

And finally...

If you wish consideration of assistance, you must please be considerate also.

Thanks for understanding.

Blog EntryPremium Users At This Group (Take Note)Jun 25, '08 10:21 PM
by Linda for everyone
Since Premium Users cannot see ads on ANY site (not just be ad-less on their own sites), it may be necessary to view someone's link or page in another browser either logged out or with a free account in another browser, depending on what the question or issue is.

Also, theme designers who have Premium Accounts will need to check all themes the same way to ensure the ads aren't distorted or affected.  This can happen even when not using code that tampers with the ads.  Some code, especially broken could affect the ads.

Premium users will need to be more diligent with any codes or tutorials now that are done by triple checking first!

IF ANY CODE IS ONLY FOR OR ONLY WORKS for Premium USERS this MUST be stated.  Otherwise Free users will be trying to use code that will not apply to their sites.

We may discover along the way, tutorials already here that may have to be edited and if any are found, please bring them to our attention.

Please know that there is NO distinction in this group whether you are a free or premium user.  It does not matter which type of account you wish to maintain at Multiply.  Some things however do or might work differently for Premium Users so initially you may see posts that pertain to Premium Users only.  This is necessary so that new Premium users are aware of some of the changes that are specific to them, that they will need to pay particular attention to.

Just a quick note to let you know that IF you purchase the Premium Service and you have already or are considering using CSS to hide your online status on your homepage, the Premium Service Designation will not show under your headshot.  Remove that portion of the code and you can then verify and see it there.  (You will also see it in Settings/My Account).

I haven't had a chance yet to see if "online status" is discernible from your account designation as yet, but a quick look showed me it isn't at this time.  I'll look harder at it later.

ALSO, some CSS that you are using to hide other links in your rail MAY hide the new Media Locker there that is for ALL users.  If you do not see the Media Locker Link under your headshot, you will need to find the portion of code that is hiding it.

Blog EntrySneak Peek At Upcoming Features!Jun 23, '08 9:42 PM
by Linda for everyone
Sneak peek at upcoming features!

From the Multiply Staff Blog !

MORE THINGS THAT MIGHT NEED DOING:

  • Check your email and post something funny from there.  We are bored and want to read your blog!  We need a good laugh!  (My email engine is firing up as we speak)

  • Go snagging for images and gifs.  Go to google, click on images and type in anything you can think of.  You'll always find some GREAT stuff that way.  (I did "gold gifs" and found that great site I posted in links)

  • Double check your email alerts.  Aren't you still  getting way too much (or not enough) in your email?

  • Have you changed your password lately?  I KNEW IT!  Time to do that too.

  • POST ANOTHER BLOG!  I just read the last one you did and it was hilarious!  I want more!

  • Upload some pictures !  WE LOVE PICTURES!  We love captions even more!

  • WRITE a blog.  Talk about yourself a little.  Ok, so you might even fudge a little.  So what.  Everyone is BEAUTIFUL and RICH online anyway, right??

  • Browse for videos and throw one up for us.  We love them too!  The funnier the better.

  • Go to your inbox, preferences and look at the different ways you can customize the view there.  Try out table!  I love it.  Tick and untick everything til you find a new look you like.

  • Make some filters while you're there.  I have MD (that's us) and just to make sure something doesn't slip by me, I also have MD UNREAD.  <<  That one's been a lifesaver when I've had to be offline for some reason.

  • View your page as another user... Maybe time to switch around what's public and what's private a little?

  • Change what shows as favs on your homepage.  Easy way to get a new look!

  • FINALLY, go snag some links from other people and groups, use the Share Link and share the great things that other people put up with those you know.  After all, my contacts aren't your contacts.

  • Share what you have also!  You know you've been meaning to do that!  Use your OWN share link to do that.

PLEASE remember when posting about any post or tutorial here that you ONLY post a link to the thread here with a short summary about what the link is for.  PLEASE do not take the information or copy paste it from here,  to somewhere else.  There are very important reasons for this.

First, the original thread/tutorial author should get credit and in the
thread THEY posted it in.  A link added to a repost does not do that.  If you have reposted the information, even with a link, then certainly there is no reason to follow the link.

Secondly and even most importantly, the REPLIES and UPDATES to the tutorials and threads here are MORE important than the original posts.  If a post or tutorial here is just reposted somewhere else, these updates do not make it over to your repost.

Example:  I posted a tutorial and it was GREAT.  No one had figured this out until that time.  BUT.. it was only after using the code for a few days that it was discovered that it disabled a feature that we were not allowed to disable.  (The ability to follow through with block/report)  The thread was updated, everyone was warned to remove the code if they were
using it, and then the thread deleted.  All went well as it should have.

It was then discovered that it was reposted elsewhere.  The updated information never made it over, and many people not associated with this group was using the code, disabling these features.  It was a mess that I ended up cleaning up one user at a time as they were found
before these people were reported.

So see?  It's not an ego thing for a thread author or replying member.  (Though our members deserve every bit of credit for what they post
here, whether they author a thread, test the code, or give their feedback on it)  This can't happen if it's taken from this group instead of linked TO this group's thread.   A thread author will also, along with the rest of the group, test a code, apply it in ways that most users don't think of (different browsers, different circumstances, etc).. and then many report back to that thread.  So many times we update code as updates are made to Multiply.  And support is offered here in the original thread.

SO PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SHARE BY LINKING to any thread here with a description ONLY.  But please don't TAKE what we post here for repost unless YOU are the original thread author.  You can also click on the SHARE link at the bottom of any post here!!  Please use that!

REMINDER:  This particularly INCLUDES themes that theme authors have put up in Theme groups - Use the SHARE link and link to it and do NOT repost or republish another theme author's theme. Even if credits are left in the code, this is the ONLY way a theme author will get credit. Not to mention if a theme is updated by an author!

Blog EntryCSS AND HTML ISSUES RESOLVED (UPDATE)Jun 19, '08 10:12 PM
by Linda for everyone
BOTH CSS AND HTML ISSUES SHOULD BE RESOLVED NOW.

Since we can't and shouldn't be messing around with our CSS and HTML until we know the issues are resolved (Staff is aware and working on it right now)...

Don't we have some stuff we should be doing and putting off, like FOREVER?  For instance...

Do you have TONS of stuff pinned on your inbox that needs to be unpinned now, so you can actually see your new messages?  (Raises hand)

All those things you bookmarked in our Links section that you haven't gotten back to yet for some really cool backgrounds, images etc...  want to go get some of those now?

How about some of the colorized logos we have in albums here... Want to grab a few?  Want to share some links from here on your site or group?

Have you planned on going back to my homepage public albums and snagging some of those MANY wallpapers and sort of forgot to do it?

Speaking of bookmarks (cringe) .... maybe if we straighten some of those out we can actually find them when we look for them?  (raises hand again)  How do those get such a mess in a short period of time anyway?

Joined new groups lately?  Have you set your email alerts (again)?

Do you have codes saved on your computer in ten different places?  How about organizing a few of those while we're at it.  I have CSS from a year ago I will never use again.  About umpteen copies... I need to toss those myself!

Want to reorganize a few photo albums? Redate a few old posts to bump them up?  Delete that Merry Christmas that's still sitting in your blog from two years ago?

We have lots to do while we wait.  And as soon as it's all working again (and you know that Multiply is the one site that actually DOES work on issues right away)..  someone will holler that it's working again.   In fact, in the time it took me to write this, something may be working again.  I'll go check just in case.  :)

Blog EntryWe Can't Do What Multiply DoesJun 12, '08 6:43 PM
by Linda for everyone
When you get that urge to complain about the occasional glitch with your Multiply, (especially about our design issues) it's a good time to remember that WE can't do what THEY do.  I know I COULDN'T do it if Staff held my hand.

Just as we are here by way of hardware, software, and operating systems, (sometimes inadequate with all three)  your Multiply is also a vast array of computers.  As much as we struggle to keep one or two little computers working to be here, take a look at what MULTIPLY has to do to keep us here!!  (Opens in new window and notice the date)

(Next time we get the urge to complain, we should go read this again)  lol

Blog EntryQuick Group Reminders & Thanks!May 31, '08 9:17 PM
by Linda for everyone
Don't forget to use the great Search Tool on every page before posting your question!  Try different keywords and if you are new to group, if you browse the BLOG tutorials, you will find what keywords you might need to use.

If you haven't done this yet, or are new to this group, check your EMAIL ALERTS!  We don't want anyone's email being flooded from this "very" busy group!

If you haven't posted your first question yet, remember there is POST MODERATION on the first one that must clear Multiply's spam filter (admins have no access to this), so if you can't find what you are looking for, get that first question out of the way!  After that, your posts will show immediately.

This group has some of the best tutorials on Multiply so spend some time browsing the BLOG section and the PHOTOS showing on the homepage are also tutorials.

The LINKS section here is amazing.  Anything you could want for customizing your Multiply!

Thanks to ALL members who have assisted here with these amazing tutorials and links!  And for following up not only with your own tutorials, but assisting everyone with all their questions.

Thanks to the MANY members who have contributed their time and knowledge to show us all something new as well as answer questions so quickly too!

If you notice the TAGS and tagged content, we have been very diligent in trying to keep them organized, and content tagged appropriately.  But if you can't find it, just use the Search box on the top of each page.  (Thanks to Luiz for this jewel).

GROUP ADMINS are listed on the HOMEPAGE Member List and there is usually always one of us around.  And if we aren't, there are many members here who will help take care of you!

We are all eagerly awaiting the next update due out soon, but in the meantime, there's still a lot we can be doing with our designs.

ENJOY!

Blog EntryEASY Reply Templates - Say It Again And AgainMay 31, '08 12:50 AM
by Linda for everyone
Get tired of saying the same thing over and over when replying to certain questions in groups?  Wish you had an auto message for guestbooks or posts?  Now you can!  Works in any reply (textarea)  For Firefox users, make your own templates and then just type your key tag word.

1.  Download/Install the greasemonkey add on Firefox  HERE

2.  Restart Firefox.  You will see the little monkey face in the bottom of your  Firefox's taskbar.  Right click on it and you can enable/disable it.  Make sure it's enabled.

3.  Install the Tab Area Userscript  (top right of page )  HERE
Self installs so just click on it.

Now you are ready to make your templates.

1.  Right click on the Greasemonkey Icon (the monkey face) in your Firefox tray. Then  User Script commands, Edit Textarea Template.

2. In the new tab/window you will type a SHORT (key) word in the tag area, and all of your text you wish to have appear when you type the command for it to appear.
Then save.  You're done.  Click New to make your next one and make as many as you wish.  Save each and when done, close the window.  You can go back and edit any of them or add to them later.

3.  In ANY reply box here at any group or site, just type in {{your keyword tag here}} and the template you set up with magically appear.

FOR INSTANCE:  When I type  with no spaces, {{ userid }} , this is what will show in my textarea/reply box when I preview or publish:

No.  You cannot change your User Id.  You may change your name only in Settings/My Account.

When I type with no spaces {{ title }} this will display in my textarea/reply box:

Please edit your post and retitle it with the actual subject of your question.  Thanks.

No more typing the same thing over and over and over.  Double brackets with a short word does it all for you!!

(Wasn't really sure what group to post this tutorial in so for now, I just put it here)
